The Revolutionary Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America will help celebrate the BSA’s 100 Years of Scouting with a Trailblazer Adventure Day.
The event, set for June 12 at Camp Russell in Woodgate, will be held in partnership with the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance.
The one-day program is an all-around introduction to the thrill of outdoor sports and the importance of conservation. There will be a variety of activities, demonstrations, and orientation sessions for children and their parents. Among the subjects to be covered will be firearm safety, archery, trapping, and fishing.
More than 400 Boy Scouts will participate. The event, which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., also is open to the public free of charge. Participants are asked to park at the White Otter Fish & Game Club in Woodgate, with shuttles available to Camp Russell.
There will be presentations from the New York Houndsmen, New York Trappers Association, Ducks Unlimited, Adirondack Wild Turkey Unlimited, and Adirondack Exposure, plus re-enactors from the Revolutionary War, Mountain Man, and Civil War eras. Other activities will include fly casting, fly tying, fishing, a climbing wall, rope bridge, archery, air rifle and rifle shooting, shooting demonstrations, and more.

Free fishing clinic June 5
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Region 6 office will kick off National Sportfishing Week with a free clinic at the Washington Mills Athletic Park off Oneida Street.
The annual clinic, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., encourages recreational fishing by children and adults. No fishing license is required. This is a great opportunity to learn to fish or help a youngster learn. 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Volunteers will help youngsters and adults to fish, there will be displays, instructional information, and more. There will be fishing tackle for those who don’t have their own, and bait will be available. There will be food and drinks available for a small fee, or you can bring your own lunch.
The event is supported by CNY Youth Fishing Educators, Sauquoit Fish & Game Club, Wyndott Fish & Game Club, Mohawk Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Fly Fishers Anglers Association, New York Outdoorsmen Hall of Fame Association, Bob and Kathy Morgan of Morgan’s Wholesale Bait, Town of New Hartford Parks & Recreation, and Federated Sportsmen’s Clubs of Oneida County.

Moose River Plains road opens
The Moose River Plains Road is open to vehicles this weekend, and will be through the summer.
The road had been closed because of staffing issues caused by New York State’s budget problems, but state and local officials have worked out a deal to cover maintenance duties and costs. Roads south of the “Big T” junction – Otter Brook and Indian Lake roads – will not be open.
However, the New York State Conservation Council still planned its rally that was to take place in Inlet yesterday. President Howie Cushing said the road closing situation has highlighted much bigger land use and access issues that the organization will address shortly.
Big sturgeon in Oneida Lake
They’ve been putting sturgeon in Oneida Lake for 15 years, and those fish are getting big.
Lake sturgeon can live more than 100 years and grow to nine feet and 200 pounds. There is nothing that big in Oneida right now – at least, I don’t think so – but there might be some day.
Researchers at Cornell University’s Biological Field Station at Shackleton Point recently netted a sturgeon that weighed 85 pounds. The length was unavailable, but you can judge for yourself. Capt. Tony Buffa has a photo of the fish on his website.
